Jack was born on February 21, 2040 to Michael and Kylie Harrol of Milwaukee. Jack was to have a sister, Jennifer, but she was stillborn when Jack was 5. His parents took the loss hard, and it served as the impetus for them to establish Harrol Provisions, their shop. Jack was a bit young to fully understand what had happened at the time, but as an adult occasionally wonders what life would have been like with a little sister to look after. Maybe instead of dedicating himself to thievery and manipulation, he would have calmed down, taken care of his sister, found a safer way to live. But maybe not.
After his parents established the shop, Jack spent almost every waking moment there. As he grew older he began helping out, sweeping floors, organizing shelves, typical shop keeping duties. The family never had a lot of money, but they had enough to get along. The shop began to gain steam and became more and more successful as Jack grew older. He continued helping out, eventually being entrusted with running the shop every so often when his father allowed.
When Jack was 14 years old, his father procured an extremely rare timepiece from before the apocalypse. Jack didn’t understand what made this piece so special, but his father claimed this would be their ticket to a comfortable life. All they had to do, Michael said, was wait for their buyer to arrive from Madison, and they would make enough money to finally buy a bigger shop, stock more goods, and multiply their profits. Jack, of course, couldn’t help but brag about this to some of the other boys his age.
Jack was running the shop a couple days later when a man came in and immediately began browsing around. Jack didn’t think much of the man at first glance, except noticing he had a strange scar on his right hand, almost looking like a cat's eye. Jack was surprised to find that cat's eye behind the barrel of a gun shoved into his face a moment later. The man demanded the watch and all the cash in his family’s safe. Jack’s parents came in just as the man was leaving with his haul. The man fired a single shot, hitting Kylie in the stomach and damn near killing her outright.
After the incident at the shop, Jack’s parents did their best to move forward. Kylie recovered from being shot, and she and Michael continued to run the shop. Their buyer came and went, and the promised money left with him. Michael hired a guard, Cyrus, to watch over the shop, and everything settled back down to normal. Everything except Jack.
Jack blamed himself for the robbery. He thought, "I should have stopped him. I shouldn't have bragged about the watch in the first place. This is my fault." Despite his parents assurances that they didn't blame him, Jack became withdrawn. For months, he hardly did anything except stew on the robbery. This carried on until, a year after the robbery, Jack was sent to fetch supplies for his parents. The man Jack was to buy them from, a stodgy old bastard called Crow, took Jack's money before telling him, "Sorry kid, we're fresh out." When Jack tried to protest, he was thrown out onto the street by Crow's guards.
Right then and there, Jack decided he had had enough. Enough of being a victim, enough moping around, enough inaction. As tempted as he was to march back into Crow's shop and beat the hell out of the old man, Jack knew that he wouldn't last long in a 1-on-3 fight. So, he took the smarter route. Jack snuck around the back of Crow's warehouse, and busted a lock to gain entry. He found the supplies that he had paid for, that Crow was supposedly "fresh out" of. Jack wasn't eager to make his parents a target again, so he left those alone. Instead, he grabbed whatever else he could carry and made a beeline for the door. Jack took his ill-gotten gains down the block to another wholesaler, one he knew wasn't too fond of Crow. He was able to trade his stolen goods for what he needed and went on home.
Suddenly, a new world was open to Jack. No longer would he be the meek victim, only getting what he needed if it came his way. Jack would take what he needed, but he would only take from those who could stand to lose. He didn't want to be the same as that bastard who took the watch. Over the following years, Jack trained himself in the skills he would need to be a successful thief: picking locks, sneaking, persuasion, among others.
Jack has become a talented thief in the years since that first burglary. Officially, he still works at the shop with his parents, but his side job has been taking up more and more of his time. He stands 5'11 and has a toned physique. Jack is a bit of a smartass, usually quick with a joke or witty remark when the situation demands (and more often when it doesn't). Despite that, he's friendly enough to most, unless someone gives him reason not to be.
Lately, Jack has been feeling a need to set out on his own. He still hasn't forgiven himself for letting the man with the scar get away with the watch, and wants to find a way to provide for his parents, who are getting on in their years. Jack still has a good relationship with them, despite them having no idea what he does when he's not in the shop. He hopes one day to open a shop of his own, perhaps tailored to the needs of thieves like him, or perhaps something more legitimate. All he knows is he wants to take care of his folks.
Jack is rather poor, barely scraping by. Though he has the means to raise himself out of poverty, his morals have thusfar prevented him from doing so. Jack remains committed to only stealing from people who give him a good reason to do so. Jack has also developed a bit of an interest in watches: whenever he sees one, he'll try to subtly examine it to see if it matches his memory of the one taken from his parents. If he can find the watch, Jack reasons, he can find the man with the scar, and kill the son of a bitch for what he did. In the back of his mind, Jack knows this will probably never happen, but he's determined not to let the chance slip through his fingers if it does arise.
Jack does have a few weaknesses: a pretty lady, a hot meal, and a nice set of lockpicks. He will become distracted by beautiful women, often taking the time to flirt with them in wholly inappropriate situations.
